Last week we saw how the media is defining this race: who can make the most money? This week, key education reform groups and individuals turned the focus of the election where it belongs: the issues. Michelle Rhee, a nationally renowned progressive education reformer, says our failing education system is the biggest problem this country faces today.
Today, I am asking you to support me in my effort to attack this problem in the 46th District.
The Status Quo Prevails
Maryland state assessment results were released this week. In Baltimore City, 8th grade students are scoring at a pass rate of 38.9% in math, 61.5% in English and 32.1% in science. In Howard County, students scored with a pass rate of 84.5% in math, 90.6% in English and 85.6% in Science. This is the achievement gap. The disparity in educational achievement in our state is unacceptable.
George Della has failed to enact progressive education reform legislation during the last 27 years. These scores represent 27 years of maintaining the status quo of failure for our schools and our students.
I need your support to make the necessary changes in our education system. I'm asking you to contribute $27, $54, or $81 dollars to our campaign today - $1, $2 or $3 for every year of educational inequity during which Della has failed to make policy changes that would reduce or eliminate the achievement gap for our students.
Bill Ferguson Named Education Reformer of the Month
The Democrats for Education Reform have named me the Education Reformer of the month for August because they know I understand the true problems with the system and have a clear plan for change.
"It's rare to see candidates for public office highlight their support for education reform on their web sites. (Usually they say they support smaller classes, but that's it - even the good ones!) Bill's site highlights prominently his background as an education reformer and a dedicated public servant. Bill is taking on both the political establishment and the education establishment so every dime matters."
Please make a contribution of $27, $54, $81 or any other amount today so we can attack the achievement gap in Baltimore City through progressive education reform and change the story for our students in the 46th District.
