Why We Must Win

Of all Michelle Rhee's accolades and accomplishments, the most impressive - and important - is that she was a Baltimore City Public School teacher who raised student achievement in her classroom.

Ms. Rhee joined me last week to discuss the urgent need to elect policymakers with the creativity, know-how, and courage to improve our schools. Watch this video to hear both of us describe why we can't afford the same political leadership that has failed Baltimore's kids.

I'm a proud Democrat, and I believe that every single child should have access to a terrific public education. That's why I'm running for the Maryland State Senate against George W. Della. For twenty-seven years, Senator Della has had the opportunity to improve our students' outcomes and he has repeatedly failed to enact progressive education reforms.

Sadly, his record of failure speaks for itself. Maryland state assessment resultswere released last week. In Baltimore City, 8thgrade students are scoring at a pass rate of 38.9% in math, 61.5% in English and 32.1% in science. In more affluent Howard County, students scored with a pass rate of 84.5% in math, 90.6% in English and 85.6% in Science.Fewer places in America demonstrate a starker education gap than in my home in Baltimore City.

It doesn't have to be this way.Take a moment to send this video to your friends, post it to your Facebook or Twitter accounts, and most importantly consider investing in this campaign with a contribution. Democrats for Education Reform and the powerful Maryland League of Conservation Voters have endorsed our efforts, and we're gathering more volunteers and supporters every day. Together, we are poised to shake the political class to its foundation and demand equity on behalf of ALL of our kids.
